Sometimes Rest Comes First (June Rhythms)
The conversations didn't happen when I wanted them to—but they happened when they needed to.
Summer mornings have found me awake before the rest of the house.
Not because I’m trying to be productive, but because I think my soul is craving margin.
And maybe that’s why this month’s lesson surprised me so much...
Remember when I wrote last week about summer not needing to be optimized?
We went to the lake right after the last day of school, and I had every intention of planning, preparing, setting goals, and having lengthy conversations with my husband about summer. But that didn’t happen. Turns out what we needed on that trip was different: rest, play, lingering, reading, spending time with each other and with friends. It was a glorious week!
I think so often I try to fit things into my schedule, my timetable, my control. (Do you relate?)
But that’s not always how it works.
II’ve actually found the best time to plan, dream, and have lengthy conversations is not when you are rushed into a timeline, but when your mind and timeline are freer.
We didn’t have the conversations at the lake as I’d hoped, but it turns out our quarterly getaway was when those came naturally.
